The Project
The 1H_Hub project is part of Linea 6 – Grandi Sfide di Atenep (GSA), an initiative funded by the University of Milan – La Statale to support innovative and interdisciplinary project proposals aligned with the University’s main scientific, cultural, and social development strategies.
This funding instrument falls within the framework of the University Research Support Plan and is connected to the objectives of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the National Research Programme 2021–2027, and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The purpose of Linea 6 is to promote large-scale projects that address major scientific, technological, and societal challenges, fostering collaboration among multiple Departments and the creation of research teams capable of generating long-term impact.
The 1H_Hub project is strongly interdisciplinary and is designed to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges within the “One Health, One Earth” framework.
Objectives
The 1H_Hub project aims to develop and promote, at both national and international levels, a “One Health & One Earth” Resilience Hub integrating expertise and infrastructure to acquire and process interdisciplinary information.
This system will enable the identification of critical scenarios and the implementation of coordinated, cross-sectoral strategies to support the ecological and sustainable transition of systems affecting the environment and human health.
Specific objectives include:
- Analyzing vulnerabilities across different ecosystems using advanced and reproducible methodologies.
- Identifying platforms, infrastructures, and expertise required to address identified needs.
- Acquiring and integrating heterogeneous data, tackling emerging pollutants and overcoming the limitations of conventional treatment systems.
- Leveraging big data networks to bridge knowledge gaps within the One Health approach.
- Defining intervention strategies based on innovative methodologies, products, and services.
- Assessing social, political, legal, and economic contexts to develop effective measures and success indicators.
- Promoting the validation and replicability of the model at national and international levels.
Program
Management and Cross-Sectoral Coordination
The objective is to strengthen the coordination of project activities and the associated network in order to foster synergy and integration among interdisciplinary competencies, whether already established or newly developed.
One Health Approaches for Territorial Contexts and Sectoral Profiles
Development of applied examples of One Health approaches in the agri-food, livestock, environmental, and human health sectors, with the aim of generating essential knowledge on pollutants and potentially harmful production practices within the broader One Earth – One Health framework.
Case studies:
- The agri-food supply chain
- The livestock sector
- Environmental contamination
- The human dimension
Policy and Regulatory Analysis
In-depth examination of the legal, regulatory, and economic implications of the One Health paradigm, facilitating the implementation of innovative policies and strengthening the connection between technical-scientific expertise and legal competencies.
Case studies:
- Legal framing of the implications of the One Health paradigm
- Definition of environmental citizenship education policies
- Analysis of programmes implemented by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) for environmental citizenship education
- Study of the European policy framework for environmental citizenship education
- Implementation of legal case studies
- Economic case studies and policy analysis for sustainability
Data Acquisition and Modeling, Data Lake Management
Implementation of data collection, management, and modeling processes through ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) and ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) architectures, developing advanced analytical models while ensuring data quality, integrity, and security.
Key components:
- Data governance and management
- Analytical and data processing models
- Methodological seminars
- Cloud continuum and ETL/ELT pipelines
- Open Science and Open Data
Identification of Intervention Strategies and Testing
Implementation and validation of intervention strategies and/or products with applications across the various domains of the One Health framework.
Case studies:
- Application of innovative agri-techniques and new protection strategies for agri-food and livestock supply chains
- Development and validation of new bioactive molecules for the agri-livestock sector, alongside circular economy approaches for the valorization of by-products
- Implementation of microbial ecosystems and biotechnological interventions
- Development and scaling up of technologies and materials for environmental remediation
- Multi-stakeholder education initiatives
Dissemination and Promotion of the Hub
Effective communication of the activities and results of 1H_Hub, alongside the promotion of partnerships at national and international levels
